Definition of Mental Health

According to the WHO, mental health is defined as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

Health, in general, is defined by the WHO as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

It’s crucial for people to live to realize their full potential

Something to note about the WHO’s definition of mental health is that it includes the phrase “every individual realizes his or her own potential”.

I think that’s the most important phrase in the entire definition.  It’s impossible to have a state of mental well-being when deep inside one is reminded that their current state is less than they are designed to be living. I think when people are empowered to live their full potential, the other elements of the definition fall into place or at least become much easier to achieve.

That’s why in my work, helping people find and fulfill their calling is a crucial aspect of their health.
